This year's parade theme is, "Building Bridges Across the Last Frontier." Two distinguished Grand Marshals have been recognized for their efforts in building bridges between the diverse groups that make up our beautiful Capital City. In each one’s unique path, both have used education, cultural celebration, and historical stories to create an atmosphere of understanding and appreciation between brown, Black, white, Asian American and Pacific Islanders, and Indigenous Americans.
Benjamin Danny Coronell has dedicated his career to the motto “to serve and protect.” He has dedicated many years of his life to serving our community, through his time as a police officer and later an advocate for the dangers of substance abuse and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. His distinguished service has contributed to a well-deserved honor of Grand Marshal. The other honored Grand Marshal, Sherry Patterson is an active community leader, juggling many roles such as president of the Black Awareness Association, co-chair to First Lady Donna Walker to Bridge Builders of Juneau, and an on-call religious counselor at Lemon Creek Correctional Center. Sherry has directly elevated the role of women and overcome racial barriers in our community, making her an obvious choice for an admirable Grand Marshal at this years celebration.
Both of our GM’s represent the amazing impact of living a life of service to others. A notable shared characteristic of each GM is a vigilance to bring together our community. With extraordinary grace, Benjamin and Sherry, have risen above the societal obstacles and have contributed to building a community-bridge; a strong bridge established on principles of honor, respect, and courage.
