Days Until Parade

2018 Theme: "Volunteers. Fabric Of Our Community"

Cathy Muñoz is a lifelong Juneau resident who was elected to the Alaska State House in 2008 after serving on the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly for three terms.  Raised on Chicken Ridge in downtown Juneau, Cathy now lives at Lena Point with her husband, Juan, and son, Matthew.  Her daughter, Mercedes, is an artist who is married to Juneau school teacher Billy Sarandria.

Cathy is a fourth generation Alaskan and the first third-generation member of the Alaska Legislature following in the footsteps of her father and both grandparents.  During Cathy’s tenure, she championed major improvements to Juneau’s aging infrastructure and successfully shepherded more than a dozen bills into law.  She is a graduate of the University of the Pacific where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science.

Cathy’s interest in public service is especially inspired by her grandmother, Thelma Engstrom, a school teacher who served as one of Alaska’s first elected female legislators.

A small business owner, Cathy is the current chair of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and volunteers with numerous organizations and community events, including Juneau’s famous Golden North Salmon Derby.
